These are not stock photos you buy on line. These are actual filters installed in homes that draw water from the municipal systems where you live. Not everybody's filters look this bad after a year's use but these are in almost every community. All cities and towns deal with the same thing - old pipes, many over 100 years old. Think of  carotid arteries. a build up of rust, bacteria and other contaminates.
